The Gift Of Fear by Gavin De Becker

The title of the book might seem a bit ironic.  How can fear be a gift?  Haven't we heard that Fear is an anacronym?  You know:

False
Evidence
Appearing
Real

Most likely what we experience is worry as opposed to fear.  We have to separate what those things mean.

Worry is what you feel when going to a new job or when you ask the girl out.  Or when you walk across a dark parking lot.  That's anticipating bad things happening.

Worry does you no good.  And it might distract you if something really does happen.

Fear can actually save your life or prevent you from getting seriously injured.

What fear is when you get a feeling about someone or a situation.  It might be the way a person is holding his hands like he's concealing something. (Note:  I'll be using the male pronoun as the male gender is, in every culture of the world according to the book more violent than women.)

A lot of crimes start out at the interview stage.  Or at least that's what we think.  Usually a criminal will observe his intended victim to see if you're an easy target.

At the interview stage the criminal seeks to confirm this.  If he is holding his hand behind his back assume he has a weapon and maintain minimum safe distance of at least 10 feet.  Speak confidently and firmly.  Don't appear to be an easy victim as that's what criminals look for.

Fear is what will help you.  Worry causes stress and hear disease.  Most violent crimes do happen to other people, this book will help you to recognize and avoid situations when you might be in danger.

And if you do find yourself in a situation where you need to protect yourself this will help you.
